Cam Thanh Coconut Village Guide
Basket boats, water coconut forests, and village cycling — Hoi An's rural escape just 3 km from the Ancient Town
Cam Thanh is a lush, green village on the outskirts of Hoi An where the Thu Bon River meets the sea, creating a brackish waterway ecosystem dominated by nipa palms — water coconut trees that form a dense, shaded forest known as Bay Mau (Seven Hectares). This is where Hoi An's rural soul lives. The village is famous for its basket boat rides through the coconut forest, but the experience extends far beyond the water — cycling through palm-lined lanes past rice paddies and fish ponds, learning traditional fishing techniques from families who have worked these waterways for generations, and discovering a pace of Vietnamese life that the Ancient Town's tourist buzz has long since left behind. Cam Thanh is just 3 km from the old quarter, but it feels like a different world.

Things to Do in Cam Thanh
From basket boats to village cycling — the best experiences in Hoi An's coconut village.
Basket Boat Rides (Thung Chai)
Must-Do ExperienceThe iconic Cam Thanh experience is riding in a thung chai — a round bamboo basket boat that has been used by Vietnamese fishermen for centuries. Local boatmen navigate these improbable vessels through the narrow waterways of the coconut forest with extraordinary skill, paddling, spinning, and even performing tricks that tip the boat to comic angles while you grip the sides. The boats glide through tunnels of overhanging nipa palms, past fishing nets and crab traps, into the quiet heart of the Bay Mau forest. Most trips last 30-45 minutes and include a demonstration of traditional fishing techniques and crab catching. The experience is a unique blend of peaceful nature immersion and entertainingly theatrical boat handling. Book directly with local operators at the waterfront rather than through hotel tours for the best prices.
Bay Mau Water Coconut Forest
Natural WonderBay Mau (Seven Hectares) is a dense forest of nipa palms — water coconut palms that grow in the brackish water where the Thu Bon River meets the sea. The forest creates a labyrinth of green waterways, shaded tunnels, and peaceful channels that feels like a different world from the tourist bustle of Hoi An just 3 km away. During the Vietnam War, this forest served as a hiding place for Viet Cong fighters, and the natural camouflage it provides is immediately apparent once you are inside — the palm canopy blocks sight from above completely. Today, the forest is a protected eco-tourism zone. The best way to experience it is by basket boat, but kayaking is also possible for those who want a more active exploration. The birdlife is excellent, particularly in the early morning.
Village Cycling
Active ExplorationCycling through Cam Thanh is one of Hoi An's great under-appreciated pleasures. The narrow lanes wind through coconut groves, past rice paddies reflecting the sky, alongside vegetable gardens and fish ponds, through clusters of traditional Vietnamese farmhouses. The terrain is completely flat and the traffic is minimal — the occasional motorbike and plenty of other cyclists. The route from the Ancient Town to Cam Thanh takes about 15 minutes along a well-marked path, and once in the village the network of lanes invites hours of aimless exploration. Stop at the small local cafes for ca phe sua da (Vietnamese iced coffee) and watch village life unfold. At harvest time, the rice paddies turn golden and the scenery is extraordinary.
Fishing Experience
Cultural ActivitySeveral operators in Cam Thanh offer hands-on fishing experiences where you learn traditional Vietnamese fishing techniques — casting circular nets from a basket boat, setting crab traps in the waterways, and pulling in lines from the riverbanks. The experience is led by local fishermen whose families have worked these waters for generations. What you catch (usually small crabs, shrimp, and river fish) can sometimes be cooked up at a nearby restaurant. This is a particularly good activity for families and children, combining outdoor activity with cultural learning in a beautiful natural setting.
Cooking Class with Village Ingredients
Food & CultureA few operators run cooking classes that begin with a bicycle ride to Cam Thanh, continue with a basket boat ride through the coconut forest to gather fresh ingredients, and conclude with a hands-on cooking session in a village kitchen. The menu typically includes dishes made with coconut — coconut rice, coconut milk curries, coconut desserts — alongside Hoi An specialties like cao lau and white rose dumplings. The combination of transport, nature, and cooking makes this a full half-day experience and one of the most memorable activities in the Hoi An area.
Best Times to Visit
Timing makes a significant difference to the Cam Thanh experience.
Early Morning (6:30-8:30 AM)
The best time for photography and peaceful exploration. The waterways are calm, the light is soft and golden, and you will share the coconut forest with far fewer boats than later in the day. The birdlife is most active at dawn. Morning basket boat rides feel genuinely tranquil rather than performative.
Mid-Morning (9-11 AM)
The standard tour group window. Half-day tours from Hoi An arrive between 9-10 AM, and the waterways get busier. The basket boat operators are in full entertainment mode — spinning boats, singing, and performing tricks. Fun and energetic, but less peaceful than early morning.
Late Afternoon (3-5 PM)
A second sweet spot after the midday heat. The tour groups have mostly departed, the light turns warm and golden, and the coconut forest takes on a magical quality as sunlight filters through the palm canopy. This is an excellent time for cycling through the village lanes as well.
Avoid Midday (11 AM-2 PM)
The combination of direct sun, heat, and no shade on the open waterways makes midday basket boat rides uncomfortable. The coconut forest provides some canopy shade, but the exposed sections are punishing. The village lanes are also at their hottest and least pleasant.
Practical Tips
Book Direct, Not Through Hotels
Hotels and tour agencies in Hoi An charge 300,000-500,000₫ for Cam Thanh basket boat tours. If you cycle to Cam Thanh yourself and book directly with the boat operators at the waterfront, the cost drops to 150,000-200,000₫ per person. The experience is identical — the same boats, the same boatmen, the same forest. The savings are significant, and cycling there is half the fun.
Wear Sunscreen and a Hat
The basket boats are fully exposed to the sun on the open water sections. Even with the coconut forest canopy, you will be in direct sun for parts of the ride. Apply waterproof sunscreen and bring a hat. The boatmen often provide conical hats (non la) for visitors, which are practical and make for great photographs.
Bring Waterproof Bags
Basket boats are stable but can take on small amounts of water, especially if the boatman is performing spinning tricks. Keep your phone and camera in a waterproof bag or dry pouch. A plastic bag from a convenience store works in a pinch. You are unlikely to get seriously wet, but protecting electronics is sensible.
Tip Your Boatman
The basket boat operators are local fishermen whose income depends on tourism during the off-season. The standard tip is 50,000-100,000₫ per boat, given directly to your boatman at the end of the ride. These men work hard in the heat and their boat-handling skills are genuinely impressive. A tip is not obligatory but is greatly appreciated and well-deserved.
Combine with Other Activities
Cam Thanh works perfectly as a half-day paired with the Ancient Town (morning in Cam Thanh, evening in the old quarter) or with An Bang Beach (basket boats in the morning, beach in the afternoon). The village is also on the route to the Cua Dai coastline, making it a natural stop on a beach day cycling route.
Mosquito Repellent at Dusk
The waterways and coconut groves near Cam Thanh have mosquitoes, particularly around dusk. If you are cycling through the village in the late afternoon, apply insect repellent. The basket boat rides generally have fewer mosquitoes due to the breeze on the water, but the surrounding forest areas can be buggy.
