An Bang Beach Guide
Hoi An's best beach — beach bars, stunning sunrise, water sports, and a 20-minute bicycle ride from the Ancient Town
An Bang Beach is the best beach near Hoi An and one of the finest stretches of sand in all of central Vietnam. Located just 4 km north of the Ancient Town, this beautiful, wide beach with its fine golden sand, clear blue-green water, and excellent beach bars has become an essential part of the Hoi An experience.
Unlike the more developed (and eroded) Cua Dai Beach closer to town, An Bang has maintained its natural beauty while developing a wonderful collection of beach bars and restaurants that offer everything from bohemian cocktail lounges to proper beachfront dining. The beach stretches for several kilometers, with the beach bar zone concentrated in the central section and quieter, more natural stretches to the north and south. Early morning brings spectacular sunrises over the South China Sea, while the afternoon offers warm swimming, cold beers, and the gentle rhythm of the waves. The easy 20-minute bicycle ride from the Ancient Town through rice paddies and villages is a highlight in itself. An Bang Beach strikes the perfect balance between having enough facilities for comfort and retaining the laid-back, tropical charm that makes it special.

Beach Bars & Restaurants
An Bang Beach is lined with an excellent collection of beach bars and restaurants that have made it one of the most enjoyable beach experiences in Vietnam. Soul Kitchen is a perennial favorite with its bohemian vibe, craft cocktails, live music on weekends, and excellent Vietnamese-Western fusion food — their grilled seafood platters are outstanding. Sound of Silence offers a more laid-back, romantic atmosphere with bean bags on the sand, sunset cocktails, and a menu featuring fresh seafood and healthy bowls. La Plage is the upscale option with French-Vietnamese cuisine, proper table service, and some of the best food on the beach. Shore Club brings a lively party atmosphere with DJs, premium sun loungers, and a swimming pool. Most beach bars offer free sun lounger use with a minimum food or drink order (typically 100,000-200,000₫). The beach bar scene is one of the things that makes An Bang special — it strikes the perfect balance between relaxation and having enough facilities for a comfortable day.
Sunrise Views
An Bang Beach faces east, making it one of the most spectacular sunrise locations in central Vietnam. The sun rises directly over the South China Sea, casting golden light across the wide sandy beach and the gentle morning waves. Sunrise at An Bang is a peaceful, almost meditative experience — the beach is nearly deserted in the early morning, with only a few local fishermen pulling in their nets and the occasional jogger or yoga practitioner. The best sunrise viewing is from the open sections of beach between the beach bars, where you have an unobstructed view of the horizon. During the dry season (February-August), sunrise is between 5:15-5:45 AM. The 20-minute bicycle ride from the Ancient Town in the cool pre-dawn air is beautiful in itself. Bring your camera — the colors are extraordinary, and the silhouettes of traditional round basket boats (thung chai) against the dawn sky make iconic photographs.
Water Sports & Activities
An Bang Beach offers a growing range of water sports and activities. Surfing and bodyboarding are possible during the winter months (October-March) when swells from the northeast bring consistent waves of 1-2 meters — board rentals are available from several operators on the beach for around 200,000-300,000₫ per hour. Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) is popular during calmer conditions and available for hire at most beach bars. Kayak rentals are available for exploring the coastline. Swimming is generally safe with a gentle sandy bottom, though there can be undertows during rougher conditions — swim between the flagged areas. From February to September, the Cham Islands are visible on the horizon and snorkeling/diving day trips depart from nearby Cua Dai pier. Several beach bars also offer beach volleyball courts and petanque sets for guests.
Local Fishing Culture
An Bang Beach retains much of its traditional fishing village character despite its growing popularity with tourists. Early morning visitors will see local fishermen launching their distinctive round basket boats (thung chai) through the surf to check overnight nets and traps. These circular bamboo boats, waterproofed with resin, have been used along this coast for centuries and are uniquely Vietnamese. In the late afternoon, fishermen return with their catch — fresh fish, squid, and crabs that are sold directly on the beach to restaurants and locals. The traditional fishing boats with their colorful painted hulls are often beached in the sand between the modern beach bars, creating a wonderful visual contrast between old and new. Watching the fishermen work is a reminder that An Bang is still a living fishing community, not just a tourist beach.
Getting There
By Bicycle (Recommended)
Cycling from the Ancient Town to An Bang Beach is one of the great pleasures of visiting Hoi An and is the recommended way to get there. The ride takes approximately 20 minutes along flat, mostly paved roads through rice paddies and small villages. Follow Hai Ba Trung Street north from the Ancient Town, which becomes the main road to the beach. The route is well-signposted and easy to follow. Most hotels in Hoi An provide free bicycles for guests, or rentals cost 30,000-50,000₫ per day from numerous shops in the Ancient Town. The ride is flat and easy, suitable for all fitness levels. Secure bicycle parking is available at the beach for 10,000₫. Cycling gives you the freedom to arrive early for sunrise, leave when you choose, and stop at interesting spots along the way.
By Grab or Taxi
Grab (Southeast Asia's ride-hailing app) is the most convenient motorized option. A Grab bike from the Ancient Town to An Bang Beach costs approximately 25,000-40,000₫ and takes 10 minutes. A Grab car costs 50,000-80,000₫. Traditional taxis are slightly more expensive — agree on a price before departing (around 80,000-100,000₫) or ensure the meter is running. The advantage of Grab is transparent pricing and the ability to call a return ride from the beach. Reception at the beach is generally good for using the Grab app. Some beach bars will also call a Grab or taxi for you when you are ready to leave.
By Motorbike
If you have a motorbike rental (very common in Hoi An, around 120,000-150,000₫ per day), An Bang Beach is a quick 10-minute ride from the Ancient Town. Follow the same route as cycling along Hai Ba Trung Street. Secure motorbike parking at the beach costs 10,000-20,000₫. An international driving permit is technically required for motorbike rentals in Vietnam, though enforcement varies. If you are not an experienced motorbike rider, cycling or Grab are safer options — the roads around Hoi An have moderate traffic and riding in Vietnam takes some adjustment for first-time visitors.
Essential Information
An Bang Beach has excellent facilities including multiple beach bars and restaurants, sun lounger and parasol rentals (50,000-100,000₫), freshwater showers at several beach bars, public restrooms near the entrance, secure bicycle and motorbike parking (10,000-20,000₫), Wi-Fi at most beach establishments, and beach vendors selling fruit, sunscreen, and souvenirs. Water sports equipment rental is available at several locations. The beach is patrolled by lifeguards during peak hours.
The best beach months are February to August with warm temperatures (28-35°C), mostly dry weather, and calm seas ideal for swimming. March to May is the sweet spot — warm but not too hot, with clear skies and calm water. June to August is hot (35°C+) but dry and great for beach days with more shade breaks. September to January can be rainy and the sea rougher, though sunny beach days still occur — check the forecast and be flexible.
Most beach bars offer sun loungers at 50,000-100,000₫ per day, or free with a minimum food/drink order (typically 100,000-200,000₫). Premium beach clubs charge 150,000-200,000₫ with parasol. For a free option, the public sections between beach bars have open sand for your own towel. Arriving early (before 10:00 AM) guarantees the best position. Front-row loungers near the water go first. Most bars also have shaded hammock areas for those who prefer to escape the direct sun.
An Bang Beach is generally safe for swimming with a gentle sandy bottom and moderate waves. Swim between the flagged areas patrolled by lifeguards. During winter months (October-March), waves can be larger with stronger undertows. The water is warm year-round (24-30°C). Keep valuables secure — most beach bars offer locker or safe storage. Wear sunscreen and reapply after swimming — the tropical sun is intense, especially between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM. Bring a hat and seek shade during peak hours.
Pro Tips
Cycle to the Beach at Sunrise
One of the most magical experiences in Hoi An is cycling to An Bang Beach in the pre-dawn darkness to watch the sunrise over the South China Sea. The 20-minute ride through quiet rice paddies in the cool morning air is beautiful, and arriving at the empty beach as the sky begins to glow is unforgettable. Bring your camera — the silhouettes of traditional fishing boats against the orange and pink sky create stunning photographs. After sunrise, cycle back to the Ancient Town for breakfast at the Central Market, combining two of Hoi An's best experiences before most tourists have woken up.
Half-Day Beach, Half-Day Town
The ideal Hoi An day combines a morning at the beach with an afternoon and evening in the Ancient Town. Head to An Bang Beach by 9:00 AM, enjoy a few hours of swimming, sun, and a beachfront lunch. Leave by 2:00-3:00 PM to return to the Ancient Town for heritage site visits during the cooler late afternoon, followed by the magical lantern-lit streets at evening. This schedule avoids the hottest part of the day in the town, gives you beach time during the best swimming hours, and lets you experience the Ancient Town during its most atmospheric period.
Explore the Quieter North End
The beach bar zone is concentrated in the central section of An Bang Beach. Walking 10-15 minutes north along the sand takes you to a much quieter, more natural stretch of beach with fewer tourists and no commercial development. This is where locals swim and where you can find sections of beach completely to yourself, especially on weekdays. The trade-off is no facilities (bring your own water and towel), but the peace and natural beauty are worth it. The long walk along the waterline is lovely in itself.
Stay for Sunset Drinks
While An Bang Beach faces east (so the sun sets behind you, not over the water), the late afternoon light on the sea is beautiful and the beach bars come alive as the day cools. Several bars host live music on weekends, and the relaxed atmosphere with cold beers, cocktails, and the sound of the waves makes it a wonderful place to end an afternoon. Soul Kitchen and Sound of Silence are particularly atmospheric during the golden hour. Most visitors leave by 4:00 PM, so staying later gives you a more relaxed experience with the best tables and loungers available.
